Mesa raises $14M to build AI-first business education

Bengaluru's startup-focused business school secures Series A to expand AI-native programs, having grown to 550+ students across three years.

Mesa raises $14M to build AI-first business education

A business school that doesn't grant degrees just convinced investors to value it at ₹385 crore.

Mesa School of Business, the three-year-old Bengaluru institution where startup founders replace tenured professors, said Monday it closed ₹85 crore in Series A financing co-led by Dharana Capital and Elevation Capital. An additional ₹25 crore arrived through venture debt from InnoVen Capital and Alteria Capital. The round, which included a ₹3 crore secondary sale by cofounder Varun Limaye, reflects a broader bet that India's higher education system needs something closer to demolition than renovation.

"Higher education in India needs to be rebuilt for the AI era, not patched," Mukul Arora, co-managing partner at Elevation Capital, wrote in a statement announcing the deal.

Mesa has enrolled 550 students across three programs since launching in 2023, a pace that cofounder Ankit Agarwal told Inc42 translates to roughly 2.5-times year-over-year growth. The school operates a residential model where practitioners teach rather than academics: more than 100 founders have cycled through campus, and students tackle live projects for more than 200 startups, according to the company. It's a structure that blurs the line between classroom and apprenticeship.

The Model

Tuition runs steep. The flagship 12-month postgraduate certificate in Startup Leadership & Entrepreneurship costs between ₹25.35 lakh and ₹27.85 lakh. A parallel program called Forge, focused on venture building, charges ₹15.4 lakh for 12 months. A four-year undergraduate track carries a ₹48 lakh price tag and pairs a Mesa certificate with an optional degree from a partner university.

Agarwal, who studied at IIT Bombay and Harvard Business School before stints at BCG and Urban Company, told YourStory that graduates land at companies like Zomato, Zepto, Urban Company, Scapia, and Comet, earning an average starting salary of ₹26 lakh. The top quartile averages ₹36.5 lakh, according to the school. Roughly 20 percent of graduates launch their own ventures. Student startups have collectively pulled in backing from Nikhil Kamath, Ronnie Screwvala, Campus Fund, and i-Venture@ISB, Mesa said, and now generate more than ₹50 crore in annual recurring revenue.

Those numbers come with caveats. Registrar filings from fiscal 2024 show operating revenue of ₹11.36 crore and a net loss of ₹21.6 crore. Agarwal acknowledged most programs are nearing operational breakeven but said the company has not yet turned profitable.

Market Context

The raise arrives as traditional MBA programs face mounting questions about their relevance in a market increasingly dominated by AI tools and startup velocity. Mesa competes with alternatives that share its skepticism of conventional business education: Masters' Union, which secured private-university status in Haryana on September 1, operates a similar practitioner-led model. Altera Institute and Scaler School of Business offer certificate-granting programs that sidestep the degree apparatus entirely.

Vamsi Duvvuri, founder and managing partner at Dharana Capital, said in the statement that "the rapid evolution of modern tech has exposed a glaring disconnect in higher education." Dharana recently raised a large India-focused fund, according to the Economic Times, though the firm has not disclosed the precise timing or amount publicly.

Mesa plans to funnel the fresh capital into AI-first curriculum development, new on-campus programs, leadership hires, and deeper partnerships with startups, according to a company statement. "Every student builds something real... founders are always in the room," Agarwal said.

Founder Background

Limaye, who spent time as a senior product manager at Amazon and earned an MBA from Northwestern's Kellogg School of Management, cofounded Mesa with Agarwal in 2023. The pair raised a ₹34 crore seed round that April from Elevation Capital and a roster of angel investors including CRED founder Kunal Shah, Meesho's Vidit Aatrey, and Urban Company executives Abhiraj Singh Bhal and Varun Khaitan.

Whether Mesa's model scales beyond its current cohort remains an open question. The school operates in regulatory gray space, offering certificates instead of accredited degrees at prices comparable to elite international programs. But the bet investors are making is straightforward: in a job market reshaped by automation and startup churn, experience might matter more than credentials. At least for now.
