Rob Schoelkopf

Rob Schoelkopf is Co-Founder and Chief Scientist at Quantum Circuits Inc., a quantum computing company pioneering superconducting quantum systems with built-in error detection. He is Sterling Professor of Applied Physics and Physics at Yale University and Director of the Yale Quantum Institute.
Rob earned his A.B. in Physics from Princeton University in 1986 and Ph.D. from Caltech in 1995. He worked as an electrical engineer at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center before joining Yale as a postdoctoral researcher in 1995, becoming full professor in 2003.
Rob is widely recognized as one of the founders of the superconducting quantum computing field and pioneered circuit quantum electrodynamics. He was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 2015 and has received numerous honors including the John Stewart Bell Prize and Fritz London Memorial Prize.
Quantum Circuits raised over 100M in funding through Series B and was acquired by D-Wave Quantum for 550M in January 2026. The company developed dual-rail cavity qubits with hardware-level error detection to accelerate fault-tolerant quantum computing.
Rob's research has generated over 100,000 citations and his approach serves as the foundation for hundreds of academic papers. His students have founded quantum companies and joined teams at Google, IBM, and Amazon, shaping the entire superconducting quantum computing industry.
