Aina raises $5.5M to build AI-native hardware interfaces

Ex-Ultrahuman exec builds context-aware hardware for the AI age. Already shipped Dune keypad to hundreds of users; now raising to scale flagship wearable interface.

Aina raises $5.5M to build AI-native hardware interfaces

Aina, a startup split between San Francisco and Bangalore, announced July 16 it has raised $5.5 million in seed funding to build what it calls context-aware hardware interfaces for AI-native computing. Redstart Labs and 360 ONE Asset led the round, with MIXI Global Investments, Antler, and Blume Founders Fund participating.

The money comes at a curious moment for AI hardware. High-profile attempts to reinvent how we interact with artificial intelligence have stumbled publicly over the past year or so. Humane shut down sales of its AI Pin earlier this year, and Meta acquired Limitless along with its Pendant device in December 2025, supporting existing devices through 2026 but halting new sales. Rabbit keeps shipping software updates for its r1 gadget, though the device has yet to find the broad audience its maker once envisioned.

Into this landscape walks Aina, a company incorporated just months ago with a pitch that sounds familiar but aims slightly lower. Instead of promising to replace your smartphone entirely, Aina is developing what it describes as a general-purpose AI interface meant to sit alongside existing devices—handling meetings, controlling apps on Mac computers, interacting with AI assistants. Think of it as a universal remote for the AI era, though the company avoids that exact phrase.

Apoorv Shankar, Aina's founder and chief executive, has been around this block before. He previously led hardware development at Ultrahuman, a maker of smart rings and fitness wearables, where he oversaw several product launches. Before that, Shankar ran Lazy Co., which built something called the Aina Ring. Ultrahuman acquired that startup in early 2022, according to Moneycontrol.

"Phones and computers today are still primarily designed for Browsing," Shankar said in a statement, capitalizing the B for reasons he did not elaborate on. "We are building a general-purpose interface for this future, designed to capture human approval, effortlessly."

The company operates with a team of 35, many drawn from Ultrahuman and Nokia, according to its announcement. For roughly 14 months, the startup ran hardware experiments under the name Project Mirage before settling on Aina. It has already shipped one product, the Dune keypad, a three-button USB-C accessory for macOS that adapts its functions based on which app you're using. Need to mute yourself in Zoom? Dune handles it. Working in GitHub? It can manage pull requests. The device, which launched April 20 and was featured at CES, briefly topped Product Hunt's rankings and carried a list price around $119.

Now Aina is opening a private pilot program for what it calls its flagship wearable device, though details remain sparse. The company declined to specify when the product might reach general availability or what it will cost. Its waitlist went live Wednesday on the company's website.

Angel investors in the round include Kunal Shah, founder of the Indian fintech Cred; Tikhon Bernstam of Scribd; and Harshil Mathur and Shashank Kumar, who started Razorpay. That roster suggests Aina is drawing interest from operators who have scaled consumer-facing products before, which matters in hardware where production snags can kill momentum faster than bad reviews.

Vibhore Sharma of Redstart Labs framed the investment as a bet on context-aware computing. "The relationship changes when software starts to understand context and the interface disappears," he said. Abhishek Nag, who leads venture investments at 360 ONE Asset, noted that major shifts in computing—from mainframes to PCs to smartphones—have historically required new input methods.

Whether Aina can avoid the fate of its predecessors remains an open question. The startup enters a market where enthusiasm for AI-native hardware has cooled considerably since the initial hype cycle. Industry watchers at CES flagged agentic and context-aware edge devices as a near-term trend, according to the Consumer Technology Association, but translating that optimism into products people actually want to carry has proven elusive.

Aina plans to use the capital to scale production and expand its teams in both San Francisco and Bangalore. The company has not disclosed revenue figures, shipment volumes for Dune, or how many users have signed up for early access to the new wearable.

For now, the startup is betting that perhaps the problem with AI hardware was not the concept itself but the execution. Whether a more modest approach—complementing rather than replacing existing devices—will fare better is something the market will decide soon enough.
