Pandektes raises €13.5M to expand AI legal research platform

Copenhagen startup challenges LexisNexis and Westlaw with AI-powered legal database. Already serving 500+ law firms, it plans EU and North America expansion.

Pandektes raises €13.5M to expand AI legal research platform

The legal research market, long dominated by decades-old databases and entrenched contracts, has proven stubbornly resistant to disruption. Pandektes, a Copenhagen-based startup barely two years old, is betting that generative AI has finally cracked open that door.

The company announced on October 5, 2026, it secured €13.5 million in Series A funding led by Alstin Capital, with participation from PROfounders Capital, Scale Capital and returning investor People Ventures. The round, advised by DLA Piper, will fuel expansion across Europe and into North America as Pandektes targets the stronghold of LexisNexis and Thomson Reuters' Westlaw.

"We have rarely seen a market like legal research, where so many end-users would like to switch their core system but historically simply couldn't," said Andreas Schenk, managing partner at Alstin Capital. That institutional inertia, he suggested, is precisely what makes the moment ripe for change.

Founded in October 2022 by Casper B. Laursen and Søren Brokær, Pandektes builds AI-powered software that stitches together legislation, case law, administrative rulings and a client's internal documents into a unified research platform. The system surfaces cited, verifiable answers rather than speculative summaries, and offers API access to its underlying legal database. For law firms tired of toggling between multiple proprietary systems, the promise of consolidation has resonated. According to the company's October 5, 2026 announcement, more than 500 law firms, companies, and public institutions use the platform.

That customer base has expanded rapidly. In February 2025, when Legal IT Insider covered Pandektes' €2.9 million seed round led by People Ventures and Interface Capital, roughly 100 organizations were on board. By mid-2026, the startup had quintupled that figure. Revenue climbed sixfold over the past year, The Next Web reported the same day as the funding news, though Pandektes declined to share absolute numbers.

Around two-thirds of organizations that test the software become paying customers, the company said. Clients include Nykredit, the first Danish financial institution to adopt the tool, along with several Nordic law firms. The startup operates in Denmark, Germany and Switzerland, where it indexed over half a million Swiss court decisions upon entering that market in March 2026, according to a company blog post. It holds ISO 27001:2022 certification, a credential increasingly expected in an industry wary of data breaches.

Pandektes has rolled out features throughout 2026 at a clip that suggests urgency. A Microsoft Word add-in arrived in July. AI-powered document anonymization launched in March. A workspace tool called Matrix now indexes more than two million court verdicts, the company said. The startup also plans to license its data to other legal-AI developers, Tech Funding News reported, positioning itself not just as a research tool but as infrastructure.

The timing aligns with broader momentum in legal technology. Legal research has become the top generative AI use case among law firms, deployed by 80 percent of those experimenting with the technology, according to Thomson Reuters' summary of insights from a forum in August 2026. The Thomson Reuters Institute's 2026 AI in Professional Services Report showed that 41 percent of law firms and 47 percent of corporate legal departments reported using generative AI in 2026, up from 28 percent and 23 percent respectively the prior year.

Still, Pandektes faces formidable competition. LexisNexis and Westlaw have spent decades building moats around their data and customer relationships. Regional players like C.H. Beck's beck-online in Germany and Karnov in the Nordics have deep local expertise. The Next Web noted these incumbents when reporting on the funding round, underscoring the crowded landscape.

Laursen, the CEO, acknowledged the challenges inherent in taking on entrenched giants. "Every start-up will have low points, but we've always had this die hard conviction that we could build a better way to do legal research," he said in the company's announcement. Whether conviction translates to market share in a sector notorious for inertia remains the central question.

The startup's About page lists €17.5 million in total funding, indicating some additional undocumented funding beyond disclosed rounds. With fresh resources in hand, Pandektes plans to grow its team and expand API access to its legal data infrastructure, the company said.

For now, the startup's trajectory suggests it has found at least some traction in a market that has frustrated would-be disruptors for years. Whether that traction can scale against competitors with deeper pockets and decades-long customer contracts will likely determine if Pandektes becomes a footnote or a fixture in European legal technology.
